Wednesday 12th September - Art Lecture

Contextual and critical studies

Today, there was an lecture on. Well, I'm wasn't too sure at first but obviously it was something arty. I had never really been to an art lecture before and I used to think that what could an art lecture actually be about? How can anything be taught in an art lecture? All these question got answered.
The lecture was on how art can be expressed, how when you first look at a painting, can you read the story that is trying to be told? This lecture really changed my views on how I look at paitings and art.
We breifly looked at a film called Back To The Future in which Michael J Fox, I think the main actor was called, is transpoted back to his past, at a dance. At this dance from the future, he plays music on a guitar and he is performing with a band - a kind of rock and roll that wasn't really around when he was younger. He tells the band to follow him but he gets kind of carried away. I found this to be quite amusing as he's in his own world and doesn't even realise that the rest of the band have stopped playing and hes the only one carrying on. Even the dancers had stopped dancing!
Still from the film

From this, it could be said that this shows how tension and resolution run through art, and the different ways in which these can be brought across. Art is related to several things such as technology as can be seen with this example, and without it, especially these days, there probably wouldn't be much art.
In the film, black people were playing the background music and didn't like the idea of different music being played. Due to slavery, there was still some segregation and rock and roll was taken up by white people. (time 50's - 60's)
For something like that, you need to have a receptive audience. The music was way too far out and was not really accepted. By understanding the way art relates to context, you get a better judgement.
